CABO Countdown.

At the top, that's me about to jump in the pool to practice shooting underwater in Cabo this most recent October. I get to go again to shoot a wedding...and really soon.

Many brides these days like to "do something fun with their dress" the day after their wedding(let's be honest, no one really cuts it short to wear again) and in Cabo the perfect way to do this is on the beach, then in the water.
I have all the gear to make this possible...

so I am game if you are:)

The Wedding Photobooth.

2011 was the year of the photobooth.
I love it when a bride & groom want a booth.
I made so many different kinds over the past year I am going to have to have a Photobooth only gallery on my new wedding website(almost ready).
I know you'll love it, especially since I have fallen off the blog wagon here.
All of these are from Devon & Chris' September wedding in Tiburon.

JAWS.

Yesterday morning we woke up before the sun and went with our buddy Sean to witness JAWS by his boat.

Incredible and unforgettable.
A buddy of mine just let me know that this day was different and historic at Jaws as it was an all paddle, no tow day for all surfers-

Our view as we approached:

Our boat hovered beside in a safe channel...most of the time:)

If you look closely at the top of the wave above, you can see a guy's board flying in the air, it's a faint yellow.

The spray from the waves was everywhere...that's why some of the pics are a little cloudly looking:)

When we first arrived, we noticed a bunch of the tow guys waiting for the non-tow guys to finish up...we found out later there was a 50K best wave contest for the paddle guys, well, we did see some gals out there too:)

Also note, it's really hard to keep your camera steady out in that water. I almost flew in a few times.

Cleveland Family Shoot - The Boyle's

Back in August we all went out to Cleveland for my cousin's wedding. I LOVE seeing my family there, we always have the best time rain or shine(or even with extreme heat & humidity as this was the case this trip). It's very special when we can all get together and be in the same place at the same time. On that note, we had to take some family pics of the Boyle's in the beautiful backyard of my Aunt Jeanie and Uncle Jim's house. Amy, Mickey, Mac, Molly and Maddy, nice work, I think you've got some Christmas Card finalists in here.

for picking your family photo outfits.

Back in August, I went out to Cleveland for my cousin's wedding.

While out there, we had to take the opportunity to shoot my cousin's and their families, especially in their beautiful, at least one acre green backyards. We tried to make it easy, using colors already prominent in their closets for both the guys and the gals. Our final choices per the inspiration above: bright yellow, navy and pink. I'll be posting the photos from their session later today.

Colors looked really good, amazing what a few bright accessories can do to an overall shoot.

Per RAENOVATE, hawken brier is still the luckiest baby boy in the whole wide world only now he's a big boy, just having celebrated his first birthday! as the resident of the wildly popular gray striped nursery and son to interior designer, lindsay anyon brier, hawken was just thrown a marvelous first birthday party. attended by sixty of his favorite friends and family members, the shin-dig was themed around the kentucky derby, a sentimental event for the brier/anyon clan. much like hawken's bedroom the aesthetic was bright, casual and elegant with turquoise and orange emerging as the dominant colors. mama lindsay picked up the decor from various creative outlets including etsy, crate & barrel, shop sweet lulu, and caspari. a grand time was had by all, including the horse centerpiece who was crowned with a "robe of roses" just like the derby winner. happy birthday, hawken!

Kentucky Derby & 1st Birthday Party this Spring.
While the adults could feast on BBQ pork sandos and a choice of a Hawken Julep, Margarita,

the kids had plenty of fun with cupcakes and milk.

Last week Adriana(friend, wingwoman photographer, & fellow mom) & I decided to swap photos for each other. We both wanted some photos with our kids! I have tons of my daughter with family & friends, but sadly very few with me. So...I channeled the advice I give clients on what to wear for shoots...ran on over to JCREW and got inspired by their purple polish and orange notebook with a title perfect for a photo swap shoot :) It's definitely not as easy as it would seem to just pick out fun outfits, so it's nice to be inspired by a few fun colors and go from there.

By the HAUTE MAMA herself and one of my besties, JESSE.

When it comes to professional photo shoots- and I know this because I've fallen prey to this particular phenomenon- it's so tempting to throw on something safe and "flattering," which, in my case, usually equated to a slimming black shirt and some kind of jeans, which is not in any way indicative of the way I typically like to express myself with clothing. Though I still love the photos, there's a particular shoot of the hubs and I that has a bit of a "sprockets" feel about it, thanks to our matching black and denim ensembles.

So, my bottom line for styling yourself for a Spring shoot is, don't be afraid to mix things up- go bold and go bright! Sure there's a slight chance you might look back in 20 years and say, "what the hell was I wearing?" but I think that makes for even more memorable photos. That said, I've put together three outfits for the ladies out there to consider when prepping for some time in front of Lindsey's magical lens this Spring and Summer.

Look 1:

This look is not for the faint of heart, as it takes into account both bold and bright by throwing in a splash of extra bright color with the addition of the pink blazer, but may I also suggest skipping the plain white shell underneath and opting for a play on patterns by mixing in a little bit of navy stripe with your navy polka dot? One of my favorite fashion bloggers, The Glamourai, is a huge advocate of what she calls "mixology"- for a super glam take on this look, check out what she does with dots and stripes here. But, if you can't commit to print on print, go for the solid tank, I won't judge.

Now I know my personal style can tend to lean in the direction of the super feminine, so for those of you more comfortable in your trusty jeans- they are most certainly allowed- just make sure you give them the supporting pieces they deserve to make them photo-worthy. If I were going jeans for a photo shoot right now, I would probably take advantage of the new higher-waisted, wide legged styles that are popping up everywhere and pair them with a platform heel, as the combination should make those gams look nice and long. When it comes to styling the family for a photo…no matter the season … a family photo will always involve COLOR.

The Big question - What color to wear and coordinate with all?

1^st SENSE - NOT TOO SOLID…

Lets place white, black, khaki and denim on the back burner for a bit… I don’t want to rule them out just yet… but lets consider something different for a moment.

Think plaids, stripes, polka dots or any print, on 1 – 2 members of the family and build outfits for all others off those colors…

For example, a 4-color plaid (red, black, crème & green) – some wear black, some wear red or green. Crème is ok here too…it will not wash out, especially when others are wearing brighter colors. Also light colors look great in black and white photos.

Another example is an argyle sweater with 4 colors. This was especially the case in one of my most recent family photos. My father in law wore an argyle vest with bright blue and fuchsia among other colors, but these were the perfect colors to build outfits for the rest of the family. We used the bright blue and fuchsia for the family outfits. Everyone else wore denim on the bottom. It was a picture of perfection for the beautiful fall crisp morning (white and grey were our pop colors here).

If you prefer solids, think brights like some of the images above & below:

2^nd SENSE – POP ACCESSORY

Also a great contributor to color and pop in the family photo is a bright colored accessory, likes shoes, a hair bow/band, jewelry, tie, etc…have fun with this and this can actually tie everything together.

3^rd SENSE – BACK TO BASICS

Khaki and denim are great for pictures – especially when you need to figure out what bottoms everyone wears. There are lots of options with denim and khaki. They are timeless and always crisp.

Navy is great too! Its like black and white and goes with anything…any time of year!

Chambray is great in spring and summer

Solids are best for black and white photos, but a sharp print, stripe, plaid or polka dot will stand out!

I'm editing in chronological order and wanted to share what I have so far and I'm not even done editing these pics(kids+white paper+running around+bubbles+glitter+cupcakes+juice box=lots of footprints, however, I do sort of like the footprints because we all know it's pretty impossible to keep anything white with kids completely white:) - anyways, I LOVE how they turned out - they are just what I was hoping for.

The shoot was a success with about 35 kids participating throughout the day - another reason white background isn't completely white.

Can't wait to share more.
